How the invasion of Ukraine affects the metaverse [Metaversian News Issue 008]

Metaversian News Issue 008

Friday March 04, 2022

“Metaversian News stands with Ukraine.”

Welcome to Issue 008 of Metaversian News.

It didn't feel right to send out a newsletter last week when the invasion of Ukraine was just starting, so I didn't.

In this week's Metaversian News issue, we'll look a little bit into how events like this can and do affect web3 and the metaverse.

Please note that I am not a geopolitics expert, so the most I'll say outside of the realm of web3 is:

I stand with Ukraine and I believe war is bad.

On to this week's issue...

Let's go!

Building the Metaverse

“It ain’t gonna build itself.”

There have been several higher profile rug-pulls lately.

As we continue to build the metaverse, we need to figure out how to prevent this from happening.

I used to believe that anyone who attaches their real name to a project would be trustworthy.

After all, why would someone want to destroy their reputation like that?

But we're now starting to see people do rug pulls without caring about how it affects their future.

To me, $1.5 million is not enough to take the money and disappear forever.

I've always stuck with the goal only to get into projects that I like just for the sake of liking it.

Especially if I'm buying a piece of art.

And if I'm doing it for the investment, never invest more than I'm willing to lose.

But if doing our own research isn't enough, and anyone can just rug pull, how do we know what's worth getting in to?

Metaverse Events

“Meet me in the metaverse.”

The Sandbox Alpha Season 2 is here but I don't know how I feel about it.

I've been so busy that I haven't had a chance to try it out, but looking at the marketplace, everything is still expensive.

Plus, it's not on a #CleanNFT blockchain, which is something I want to focus on from here on out.

As I always say, I'm not investing in web3 for one big pay out someday.

I'm investing to build a business and a life in the metaverse.

That's why we call ourselves Metaversians.

You can check it out here: https://www.sandbox.game/en/

And hit reply and let me know if you try it out. I'd like to know your thoughts.

NFT News

“All the news that’s fit to mint.”

A group of artists calling themselves RELI3F were able to raise over $1 million in 30 seconds through NFTs.

It was the first web3 based fundraiser for Ukraine that I know of.

The last number I read was that over $30 million had been raised and donated to Ukraine across several blockchains.

Obviously raising money is nothing new.

And it's not necessary to raise money through NFTs or other blockchain technology.

But if you look at sites like Humble Bundle, we know that when people get something out of it, even if it's digital, they tend to donate more.

Take that as you will.

I figure it's a lot easier to donate in this way because we all just have money sitting in the wallets that we've already allocated to spend.

Connecting a wallet, getting an NFT, and moving on is a really simple way to donate to a cause.

Metaverse (& NFT) Marketing

“Web3 is already an oversaturated market; here’s how you stand out.”

Having a good headline (aka title) for your website (and every page) will increase mint and purchase rates.

You don't want your headline to just be something like,

Mint today!

That's called a Call-To-Action (CTA) and we'll talk more about those in a future issue.

What you really want is something that's going to catch their eye, pique interest, and move them towards learning more about your project.

A good example might be,

An NFT project unlike any other...

Of course, you still have to deliver on that promise.

Whatever you claim in your headline must be fulfilled in the rest of the body copy.

One thing you can do to pique interest is use a phrase like "this project" rather than the actual name of your project.

This Pay-To-Earn game pays out 2.2x more than the others!

It doesn't matter if they already know the name of your project or not.

What matters is that psychologically, it gets them interested in reading more.

Then, the rest of the page has to convince them to take the action you want.

Meatspace

“Life is only a dream, and the metaverse is an extension of ourselves.”

A tool for helping augment the building of the metaverse, Tabnine, is my most interesting software discovery this week.

I'm already a pretty bad coder and recently came to the conclusion I probably will never be a programmer.

But I know enough that this might help me get a little bit more done.

Tabnine is an AI trained on tons of open source code.

It helps you auto-complete your code as you're typing.

That technology does already exist, but with the AI assistance, it's more likely to quickly offer exactly what you need.

It looks like it works with the major programming languages, so if you're building the metaverse through code, this tool may help speed up your work.

Touch Grass

“So we don’t lose touch with reality.”

I've been working a lot on my health lately and I picked up this cereal called Magic Spoon and holy heck is it good.

It's a healthy cereal "for adults" (but kids can eat it too).

They're (mostly?) sugar free, high protein, and low carb.

And as I said they are delicious.

The high protein caught me by surprised when I ate it the first time.

I was used to eating mostly empty cereal, so I poured a big bowl of Magic Spoon and at the whole thing.

Shortly after, I had a stomach ache.

I had eaten too much.

Be aware this stuff is much more filling than the bowls of cereal you may be used to.

See you next week,
